Do a Good Thing Daily for
Someone Else
Jacob's Loving Heart is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness about homelessness and providing vital assistance to unhoused individuals across Atlanta, Georgia, and Tucson, Arizona.
Jacob lived by a simple yet profound philosophy: 'Do a good thing daily for someone else.' His legacy is one of deep compassion and kindness, a heart that moved through the world looking for ways to lift others up. Even in his own struggles, Jacob’s commitment to providing for those in need remains the heartbeat of our mission and the light that guides our work today.
Who We Are
Jacob's Story
Jacob made a huge difference in the 23 years and 58 days he lived. His loving heart and kindness are his legacy. His smile and belly laugh were infectious from birth until he left this world to join family and friends in heaven.
He brought us great joy and tried our patience as he grew up---as most children do. He was a blackbelt in tae kwon do at age 9, he loved basketball, he treasured his friends and his family, he wasn’t a big fan of school, and his senior year was difficult due to the tragic death of his best friend at age 17.
Jacob graduated from barber school in 2020 and began a successful barber career, but he also struggled with pain, depression, and addiction. Between rehab and recovery, he experienced homelessness---a life without knowing where his next meal or shelter or clothing would be found. Thank God he chose to seek help and had a miracle year of recovery for which we are eternally grateful.
In that year, he reconnected with his family and some friends, never missing the opportunity to tell people he loved them. His hugs were the best! He was a skilled barber and met some great people…his boss was a guardian angel. Jacob never forgot what it was like to be on the streets and would buy food or coffee when he saw someone needing help. As a barber, he volunteered multiple times at a local shelter to cut hair as a way to give back.
However, the hole in his heart from loss and depression, and the tragic physical, mental, and emotional effects of drug addiction caused Jacob to choose suicide as the answer to his pain. He died in February 2023, and his loss here has been heaven’s gain. It has tested our faith and challenged us as to how we move forward.
We discovered a goal list he’d written for 2023 among his belongings, which began with “Do a good thing daily for someone else”, which we see as Jacob’s legacy---a gift we can pass along to others. It has taken us time, but we believe that a powerful way we can honor that goal is to help others who experience homelessness by providing them basic items for daily living.
Jacob’s path taught us to recognize and appreciate that EVERY homeless person we encounter is someone’s son or daughter…..a child of God. We cannot judge what brought them to their homeless state, because we have NO IDEA of their personal story or struggle.
As we seek to spread love, kindness, and basic needs to those in dire need, please add to YOUR ongoing goal list to “do a good thing daily for someone else.”
